Pressure testing the salty series fuel tanks

Pressure testing isn't about blowing the tank up; it’s about finding the "silent" leaks. Here is how it's typically handled:

  • The Seal: Block off all openings (fuel pickup, vent, and fill neck) using airtight plugs or rubber caps.

  • The Air Source: Use a bicycle pump or a regulated air compressor to slowly introduce air through one of the ports.

  • The Soap Test: Spray every weld, fitting, and seam with a mixture of dish soap and water. If you see growing bubbles, you’ve found a leak.

  • The Hold: A healthy tank should hold its pressure for at least 15–20 minutes without the gauge dropping.

In the paint room - prepping undercoat

When you're in the paint room, the final finish is only as good as the work hidden beneath it. Prepping the undercoat is where the real "magic" happens, especially for high-performance marine vessels.

  • The Abrasion Strategy: Use the correct grit—typically starting with 80–120 grit for raw aluminum or fiberglass to create a "mechanical key" for the undercoat to bite into.

  • Environmental Control: Ensure the room is well-ventilated and the humidity is low. Excess moisture can get trapped under the primer, leading to osmotic blistering or "blooming" later on.

In the world of high-speed marine manufacturing, a welder isn't just a tradesperson—they are the architect of the vessel's structural integrity.

When you're building something like the Salty or Mako series, where aluminum is pushed to its limits by pounding swell and vibration, the quality of the weld is the difference between a lifetime of service and a catastrophic hull failure.
